If you are like me, there is a frustrating tension that arises every time I hear the words “follow the science.” We have heard it many times over the last couple of years. What does it mean? What does it imply? Between the politics, ever changing recommendations, conflicting information, and mandates, I have lost trust in many of our institutions.
Who do I trust? Who do I follow, and where are they leading me?
What science are we following? I think it is important to recognize what science is. I define science as “the observation and study of God’s creation.”
From the physical laws that describe light, energy, and matter, to the fragility and complexity of the simplest of creatures, science is fascinating. The more we discover, the more we get a glimpse of what we don’t know yet. There is an order and intricate design too wonderful to comprehend in all that God has created.
Satan has convinced many that there is no God, no creator. In this world view science takes on an entirely different meaning. The world started with an explosion, and life randomly happened.and from “goo-to-you” life evolved to make humans. It is not even a good lie, but one that many believe. It starts with the belief that there is no God. Such science becomes the study of a world without God. Science worships the creation rather than the creator. Without a creator, science is sold as the answer to all our problems in a post-modern society. The next research breakthrough will save us, the environment, and the world. Follow the science. Follow the experts. Godless science!
Godless science becomes a tool to be manipulated. There is no right and wrong. It only asks what we can do rather than what we should do. Despite some impressive medical innovation and treatments, some diseases like cancer, Alzheimer’s, autism, and many others are on the increase. Should we really take a pill for every little thing that causes us discomfort? Should we really be genetically modifying God’s creation? Life becomes random, cheap, and meaningless.
The apostle Paul perfectly describes our post-modern society in Romans 1: 18-20, “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men, who suppress the truth by their wickedness. Since what may be known about God is plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.”
Some scientists have made concerted efforts in my lifetime to prove there is no God. It is a futile effort. Real science provides an understanding of God’s invisible qualities, His eternal power and divine nature. The creation is a wonderful reflection of the creator.
We have meaning because we are created in God’s image. We are loved because Jesus Christ shed his blood. We follow Jesus Christ, not godless science.
