Brothers and Sisters of the Covenant Brethren Church,

We recently received the enclosed/attached information from our partner in ministry, Samaritan’s Purse. As many of us are aware, there is a terrible famine in Sudan. Please share this information with members of your local church. The CBC national Missions and Disaster Committee will be addressing this great concern in our next meeting. There is some urgency to this request, the rainy season is coming soon to this part of the world and the desire of SP is to deliver as many trucks of food and supplies to these starving people as possible before the road ways become washed out . We pray that funding will come in quickly to help these wonderful people in the Sudan area. I have heard that a child dies there every 2-3 minutes from starvation. Church and individual donations can be sent to our treasurer Fred Shank, 4955 Thomas Spring Road, Bridgewater, VA 22812.

Also, it probably goes without saying, PRAY, PRAY, PRAY for the folks in Sudan.

Blessings, CBC Executive Board

An Unseen Crisis

Far from the current headlines, a silent crisis is brewing in Africa. A perfect storm of military conflict, migration, and adverse weather patterns has plunged hundreds of thousands in Sudan into severe hunger.

Since conflict broke out in Sudan a year ago, eight million people have been displaced—two million fleeing the country as refugees and six million remaining internally displaced. About 700,000 of those have moved to South Kordofan, where we have a unique opportunity to provide aid. Malnutrition rates are extremely high among the displaced population and last year’s harvest in the region was down about 40%, leading to severe food shortages. The next few months represent a “lean season” until the next harvest.

But the next few months also offer a window of opportunity for us to bring aid. Timing is critical and the window will soon close. Once the rainy season begins, the roads will become impassable and we will not be able to access this region by road.

Samaritan’s Purse Is Responding

With staff and infrastructure already in place across the region, Samaritan’s Purse is developing an emergency feeding response in Sudan that your church can be a key part of. We are now preparing to rush convoys of food aid. Each 16-truck convoy (carrying 800 metric tons of food) can feed 33,000 people for three months. As you can see on the attached brief, a gift to “Feed a Family/Emergency Food” of $10,000 will provide food for 1000 people for a month!

This is truly life-saving aid—provided in Jesus’ name. Please let me know if you have questions about this response.

So thankful for our partnership in the Gospel,

Lynne Rienstra
