In our world, the sun is undeniably one of the most essential sources of light and life. Its rays illuminate our days, warm our bodies, and sustain all life forms. Without the sun, our world would be plunged into darkness, cold, and lifeless. But as powerful as the sun is there is a greater Light, one that illuminates not only our physical world but also our spiritual lives: Jesus Christ, the Son of God. In Genesis 1:16, we read that “God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night.” The sun, created by God, serves as the greater light, ruling over the day and providing the energy necessary for life on earth. Its importance cannot be understated, as its physical light is crucial for our existence.
However, the Bible also tells us of a different kind of light, one that transcends the physical. In John 8:12, Jesus declares, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. Here, Jesus speaks not of a light that merely brightens our path, but of a divine light that penetrates the darkness of sin and death, offering eternal life to all who believe.
The sun’s light is temporary. In contrast, the light of the Son is eternal and unchanging. In Revelation 21:23, we see a glimpse of the New Jerusalem: “The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.” In this heavenly city, the sun and moon are no longer needed because the glory of God, through Jesus Christ, provides all the light that is required. This passage points to a future where the light of Christ is the only source of illumination, signifying the complete fulfillment of God’s redemptive plan.
Furthermore, the light of Christ is not just for a select few but is meant for the entire world. In Matthew 5:14-16, Jesus tells His followers, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden… let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” As believers, we are called to reflect the light of Christ in our lives, spreading His love, grace, and truth to those around us.
While the sun provides the physical light needed for our temporal existence, the Son delivers the spiritual light necessary for eternal life. The sun’s light is a testament to God’s creation, but the light of the Son is a testament to God’s salvation. As we enjoy the warmth and brightness of the sun, let us never forget to seek the true Light, Jesus Christ, who alone can illuminate our souls and lead us into everlasting life.
