All of us have been horrified as we watch the news about the wildfires in Maui. As of Saturday 19, 2023, there have been 114 reported dead, and many are still missing. Mark and I thought we should update you on what is happening at Samaritan’s Purse.
We were notified that very quickly, staff and volunteer teams were working in some of the most devastated communities, helping families sift through the ashes of their fire-ravaged homes to try and recover valuables and treasured mementos. Their DC-8 landed in Maui with 17 tons of relief supplies to help hurting homeowners who have lost everything. They are working with local emergency management, church partners, and local leaders as they assess the needs in and around the town of Lahaina. Of course, they will be sharing the love of Christ as they serve in Jesus’ name. At this time, it is unlikely that members of the Covenant Brethren Church will be able to volunteer but we will keep you informed of any changes.
Here are specific prayer needs for Maui:
- For all the families affected by the disaster, especially those that have lost loved ones and are experiencing trauma. The death toll will continue to rise.
- That God will direct Samaritan’s Purse to the right host church from which to deploy volunteers.
- For the challenge in moving supplies and equipment to Maui and throughout the island to affected areas.
- For the staff and volunteers as they travel to Maui and work long days to help homeowners.
We are requesting that you share this prayer concerns with your congregation. Again, we will keep you updated as we receive new information.
