Recently, I enjoyed several days with the Calvary Covenant Brethren Church in Winchester, VA, for four days of Revival. The Lord certainly moved in our midst! What a wonderful, active, serving, faithful congregation. They love the Lord, His Word, and each other. Many Brethren enjoy eating and are quite skilled at it!

I had the privilege to stay with Calvary Pastor Jonathan Martino and family. His dear wife Amy is famous for her biscuits. And, oh my, to an old ‘dough boy’ like me, I was in Heaven. That’s all I needed. Breakfast, Lunch, Supper, just give me a couple of Amy’s biscuits! I planned to drive back to Lancaster, PA, following Wednesday night worship. Pastor Martino really wanted me to stay overnight and travel home in the morning, but I was anxious to get home. Sister Amy packed me a big bag of her biscuits. I told the dear Calvary folks who were worried about me driving late at night, “I’ve got it all figured out; if I average 25 miles to the biscuit, I’ll be just right!”

Psalm 119, the longest chapter of the Bible, is all about God’s Word. Every one of the 176 verses is about the Bible. Verse 103 uses an illustration of God’s Word as food. “How sweet are your promises to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth” Psalm 119:103 (NIV).

Just as it is very important for us to have a healthy diet to fuel our bodies, it is also very important for every believer to have a steady diet of God’s Word. If you only ate on Sunday, you wouldn’t be very healthy. If you only “feed” on God’s Word on Sunday, you won’t be very healthy either! Each of us needs to feed on God’s Word daily. I like to say, “Get some of God’s Word into you every day!” Your “daily bread.” A daily Bible reading program is great and available in many formats. A “verse-a-day” plan is also available in many formats, including as an app right on your phone or computer. Daily devotional booklets, such as Our Daily Bread and The Upper Room, are widely available. There are daily devotional books published with special themes. There’s one for deer hunters and another for quilters, among others, while still others were designed specifically for men, women, families, and youth.

No guilt! If you have strayed from your daily devotional discipline, begin anew. If you have wanted to start such a discipline but haven’t yet, now’s a great time to begin. If you are just beginning, start small with a ‘verse-a-day’ type program. But get some of God’s Word into you every day! “Give us this day our daily bread!” You will be amazed at how the Holy Spirit will take this Scripture, written in your heart, and help you to recall it along life’s journey at just the right times!
